Apartment Review for Brister Place - Memphis, TN

I leased an apartment at Southern Place West from University Crossings and when I arrived, I was greeted with a strong cigarette smell that made me choke, so I slept in the car for the first night. In spite of opening the windows, the smell didn't go away from the living room for two days. I talked to an American family who said it was from illegal drugs, as the vapours from boiling the drugs get into the walls and exposure for one year can cause cancer. The smell even got in my plastic shower curtain, which was in the bathroom, which seemed cigarette smell-free! Further, I asked to be moved to a new apartment, so they showed me one in Brister Place, which looked good during the day. I was fortunate I moved during the evening, because there were roaches everywhere (even on the doors). For the following five nights I slept at a hotel, trying to look for an apartment. I was fortunate to find someone in church who knew a lawyer and I got advice from him. I understood I couldn't break the lease (which was initially for one year, but when I looked it was actually for 13 months; they changed into a 13 months lease at my suggestion). I tried to deal with the situation. I called a pest control company, who sent a representative who assessed I had a German cockroach infestation and some American cockroaches. Then I found out American cockroaches eat paper (so I couldn't keep any books or homework at home) and I asked some of my neighbours and found out my neighbours on the left were dirty, so the roaches would reappear, no matter how much I sprayed. As a result, I decided to move. Even though I had photos with cockroaches and a newspaper to show the date, the University Crossings leasing office told me their pest control company found no infestation. I told them my photos will be against their word. It is ironic that the same office had given me a signed paper which says that they will reimburse me for the trouble caused by pest control. In the end, they didn't give me my security deposit back, claiming that I broke the lease. So, they took 34 days of rent worth $595.82, my security deposit of $100 and didn't pay for around $358 paid for five nights at a hotel, which totals to $1053.82 . I lost time, money (OVER $1000), ate at restaurants, tried to lease another place and lost a $15 application fee there after I found out the apartment complex wasn't in a safe area. Please don't rent their apartments unless you really want to deal with those crooks.
